Many East African mountains are characterized by an exceptionally high biodiversity. Here we assess the hypothesis that climatic fluctuations during the Plio-Pleistocene led to ecological fragmentation with subsequent genetic isolation and speciation in forest habitats in East Africa. Hypotheses on speciation in savannah lineages are also investigated. To do this, mitochondrial DNA sequences from a group of bush crickets consisting of both forest and savannah inhabiting taxa were analysed in relation to Plio-Pleistocene range fragmentations indicated by palaeoclimatic studies. Coalescent modelling and mismatch distributions were used to distinguish between alternative biogeographical scenarios. The results indicate two radiations: the earliest one overlaps in time with the global spread of C4 grasslands and only grassland inhabiting lineages originated in this radiation. Climatically induced retraction of forest to higher altitudes about 0.8 million years ago, promoting vicariant speciation in species inhabiting the montane zone, can explain the second radiation. Although much of the biodiversity in East Africa is presently threatened by climate change, past climatic fluctuations appear to have contributed to the species richness observed in the East African hot spots. Perceiving forests as centres of speciation reinforces the importance of conserving the remaining forest patches in the region.  相似文献

1. Strong trophic cascades have been well documented in pelagic food webs of temperate lakes. In contrast, the limited available evidence suggests that strong cascades are less typical in tropical lakes.
2. To measure the effects of omnivorous tilapia on planktonic communities and water transparency of a small man-made tropical lake, we performed a 5-week in situ enclosure experiment with five densities of fish randomly allocated to 20 enclosures. Zooplankton and Phytoplankton biomasses as well as water transparency were measured weekly.
3. Results show that omnivorous tilapia significantly decreased the abundance of large Cladocerans, increased the abundance of small algae (greatest axial linear dimension <50  μ m) and decreased water transparency as predicted by trophic cascade theory.
4. Therefore, omnivory was not a sufficient factor to prevent a trophic cascade in this pelagic community, although the cascade effect was weaker than reported from many north temperate, nutrient-rich lakes.  相似文献

Hexanal, and to a lesser degree nonanal, added in gaseous form induce coremia formation in the blue stain fungus Ceratocystis piceae (Münch) Bakshi grown in axenic agar culture. The optimum initial concentration of hexanal in the gas phase proved to be c. 2 mg/1 (2 × 10−5M). Possible ecological implications are discussed.  相似文献

The breeding ranges of the three closely related skua species in the genus Stercorarius are highly sympatric on the Arctic tundra. During the Swedish-Russian Tundra Ecology Expedition, 1994, the ages and colour phases of Pomarine Skuas Stercorarius pomarinus , Arctic Skuas Stercorarius parasiticus and Long-tailed Skuas Stercorarius longicaudus were recorded at 15 sites along a transect across 140̀ of longitude from the Kola Peninsula in the west to Wrangel Island in the east. An index of the lemming numbers was also measured. Pomarine Skua comprised 52% of the 1587 skuas seen, with 38% Long-tailed Skua and 10% Arctic Skua. The Arctic Skua occurred at low densities all along the transect. The Pomarine Skua was most common at the northernmost sites in this lemming year. It was absent from all sites with low rodent densities but also from two more southerly sites with high lemming numbers. The Long-tailed Skua showed a distribution sympatric with that of the Pomarine Skua but occurred at lower densities, and it also bred at the more southerly sites. No skuas in second-year plumage were observed. Older subadult skuas were observed in increasing numbers with age. The proportion of subadults was markedly higher in the Pomarine Skua (10%) compared with the two other species. The proportion of dark Pomarine Skuas was about 8% all along the transect. In the Arctic Skua, there was an extremely marked shift from 64% dark birds on the Kola Peninsula to an almost complete dominance by the light phase in the rest of Arctic Russia. I suggest that dark skuas are more efficient kleptoparasites over the sea while the light phase is at an advantage hunting over the tundra.  相似文献

The circular distribution of the willow warbler Phylloscopus trochilus around the Baltic Sea shares many features with the classic examples of ring species; however, the system is much younger. It has previously been shown that a secondary contact zone is located in central Scandinavia, where there are narrow clines for several morphological traits coincident with a migratory divide. Here we analyse multiple traits and genes from > 1700 males captured on breeding territories at 77 sites spread around the Baltic Sea to test the following hypothesis. If the secondary contact zone in Scandinavia is a result of divergence in two allopatric refuge populations during the last glaciation, we expect to find a similar secondary contact zone somewhere else around the circular distribution. Our results show that the trait clines were wider and displaced from each other along the eastern side of the Baltic Sea. Analyses of 12 microsatellite loci confirmed that the genome is very similar between the terminal forms ( F ST = 0). Two AFLP-derived markers filtered out from a genomic scan instead appear to be maintained by selection. These markers exhibited steep clines at the secondary contact zone in Scandinavia, but as for the phenotypic traits, had vastly different cline centres east of the Baltic Sea. The trait clines along the ring distribution outside the Scandinavian secondary contact zone thus seem to have been shaped by independent action of selection or drift during the process of postglacial colonization.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The respiration of metamorphosing gyne Lasiusflavus Fab. has been measured in field and laboratory populations. Twelve morphological stages are identified and their respiratory rate investigated. Only five physiological phases are distinguished. The specific respiratory rate varies between these phases, to produce the U-shape characteristic of insects. There is good agreement between the data from English field and Danish laboratory populations. The minimum rate is only 40% of the maximum. Except at the beginning and end of metamorphosis, the Q10 is significantly different in the two temperature intervals 10–20 and 20–30C. Metamorphosis was completed in approximately 33 days at 20C. The total oxygen consumption by the gynes during metamorphosis was 2.4 ml. Their weight loss amounted to 2.2 mg, or 36% of the dry weight and, of this, 0.67mg was accounted for by fat. Assuming the rest was carbohydrate, consumption of these reserves would release 62.9 J, which, for this combination of fat and carbohydrate, can be calculated to be equivalent to 3.1 ml oxygen which is in reasonable agreement with the figure calculated from the measurement of oxygen consumption. The specific respiratory rate in English field populations of male pupae varies in the same way as the gyne-pupae, but it is about 50% higher.  相似文献

Ultradian activity rhythms are a peculiar behavioural pattern, in which the 24-h day is divided into several short-term activity cycles. Such patterns are particularly prominent in microtine rodents. In this paper we review experimental findings and proposed hypotheses on the proximate triggering mechanism of ultradian rhythmicity. Eight different mechanisms (classified as homeostatic, pacemaker and stochastic hypotheses) were analysed within the same theoretical model-framework, considering feeding, food processing, energy turnover and activity behaviour.
Ultradian activity patterns could consistently be generated by each of the analysed models. None of the models, however, resulted in frequency dependencies in respect to body weight, metabolic rate, food quality and food deprivation, unless additional assumptions were introduced.
From our model evaluations we concluded that the stochastic model does not represent an independent hypothesis. Hence, only homeostatic and pacemaker hypotheses remained as alternative approaches to the triggering mechanism. Although the pacemaker hypothesis appeared more reasonable, a combination with some feedback mechanism to metabolism seemed even more likely. Some key experiments are suggested, which could give insight into the complex mechanism.  相似文献

1. Hyper-successful exotic species can both displace the native prey that formerly made up a native predator's diet and represent an abundant potential prey resource for native predators. Little is known about how this drastic change affects native predators, or their short- and long term potential to regulate the exotic species.
2. We compared zebra mussel consumption by pumpkinseed sunfish ( Lepomis gibbosus ), redbreast sunfish ( Lepomis auritus ) and rock bass ( Ambloplites rupestris ) from populations that were either previously exposed to zebra mussels or naive to them.
3. Fish from populations with longer exposure to zebra mussels consumed many more zebra mussels than fish from populations with shorter or no previous exposure to zebra mussels.
4. Our experiment does not allow us to identify the mechanisms that underlie the patterns we found, but we discuss several plausible scenarios and their ecological implications.
5. Predator adaptation to exotic prey may be an important but overlooked factor in invasion biology. The initial response to exotic prey by a native predator may be a poor estimate of its ability to present biotic resistance to the invasion over the long term.  相似文献
